Canada accused China of conducting an “unsafe and unprofessional” interception of a Canadian surveillance aircraft flying a sea-lane monitoring mission over international waters off the Chinese coast. A missile-carrying Chinese jet came as close as five meters (15 feet) from the Canadian aircraft and fired flares in an incident Beijing said was caused by Canada's violation of its airspace. The Pentagon, which says Chinese aircraft have carried out more than 180 risky intercepts of U.S. surveillance planes in the past two years, recently released videos and photos of more than a dozen such actions.
