North Korea’s latest attempt to launch a military reconnaissance satellite ended in a mid-air explosion during the first-stage flight, in what authorities said was a problem with the reliability of a new “liquid oxygen plus petroleum” engine. The launch, attempted in violation of U.N. sanctions, came just hours after leaders of South Korea, Japan and China reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
