Authorities in the Turkish city of Istanbul closed the Hira Uyghur Elementary School abruptly last month, turning away more than 300 students. School officials said the closure of the school, opened in 2015 by Uyghurs from the Xinjiang region of China, came after China had filed complaints. The move has raised concern that Turkey, host to a Uyghur diaspora estimated at some 50,000 people, might cave under pressure from Beijing and become less hospital to Turkic Muslims who have fled persecution in China.
