Calling on an old friend

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Henry Kissinger in Beijing, granting the 100-year-old diplomat an audience he does not always extend to top U.S. officials amid tensions on multiple fronts. With Beijing and Washington at odds over China's claims on Taiwan and the South China Sea, its human rights record, Russia's war in Ukraine and technology transfers, Xi may be hoping Kissinger's key role in normalizing U.S.-China relations in the 1970s makes him the right man to call on Washington to be more conciliatory.
