The U.S.-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called on the Chinese government to release Uyghur journalist Abdulghani Memetemin, who was handed a nine-year jail term by a court in the northwestern city of Kashgar in June 2003 for "stealing state secrets and sending them outside the country".
Abdulghani Memetemin's case came to light when the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court judgement against him was obtained by Radio Free Asia's Uyghur service.
