Vietnam's ruling party has issued a disciplinary warning to a senior figure in the council that develops its political ideology, state media reported.
Central Inspection Commission of Vietnam’s Communist Party issued the warning to Nguyen Quang Thuan, who is vice chairman of the party's Central Theoretical Council. Voice of Vietnam radio and other state media reported late last week that Thuan was punished for mistakes made as secretary of the Party Committee and as president of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences between 2016 and 2019.
However, the reports did not announce specific action against Thuan and whether he could face criminal charges.
The academy he used to preside over is considered the leading research institution in social sciences and humanities in Vietnam, according to the Association of Asian Social Science Research Councils.
Other senior members of the academy were also disciplined, including Phung Ngoc Tan, former acting head of the Organization Department. He was expelled from the party.
Among others facing discipline were Pham Van Duc, former vice president of the academy; Vo Quang Trong, former director of the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology; Tran Minh Tuan, former head of the Organization and Personnel Department and former deputy director of the academy.
It is the latest disciplinary action against top members of the academy. On Sept. 30, Bui Nhat Quang, the academy's president, was warned by the Politburo over allegedly causing internal disunity and frustration among cadres and party members. The Politburo said his actions harmed the reputation of the party and the academy. It criticized management of the academy and use of financial resources. The Politburo subsequently revoked Quang's membership of party Central Committee.
