미 국방장관 “북 핵∙탄도미사일 대응에 집중”

앵커: 미국 국방장관은 북한의 지속적인 핵과 탄도미사일 프로그램 개발에 대한 우려를 나타내면서 이에 대한 대응에 집중할 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 김소영 기잡니다.

로이드 오스틴(Lloyd Austin) 미 국방장관은 미 연방상원 군사위원회가 10일 개최한 2022 회계연도 국방예산 검토 청문회(Review of the Defense Authorization Request for Fiscal Year 2022)에서 북한 탄도미사일 방어의 중요성을 강조했습니다.

오스틴 장관: 우리 예산은 북한, 이란과 같은 국가들의 점증하는 탄도미사일 능력에 대응하는 데 도움이 될 것입니다. (Our budget will also help us counter the increasing ballistic missile capabilities of nations like North Korea and Iran.)

오스틴 장관은 청문회에 앞서 체줄한 서면답변에서 "중국의 증가하는 군사력에 대응하는 동안에도 북한에 계속 집중할 것"이라고 강조했습니다. (Even as we address China's growing military capability, we will remain focused on North Korea.)

그는 "계속해서 핵과 탄도미사일 프로그램을 개발하는 북한이 역내 동맹국과 동반자국가에 더 큰 위협이 되고 있으며, 미국 본토를 타격하겠다는 야망을 가지고 있다"고 지적했습니다. (Pyongyang continues to develop its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, posing an increasing threat to regional allies and partners and with ambitions to be able to strike the U.S. homeland.)

그는 그러면서 "미국은 외교를 필두로 북한의 불안정하고 도발적인 행동을 완화하고, 한반도 평화와 안정을 유지하기 위해 계속 노력할 것"이라고 밝혔습니다. (Leading with diplomacy, the United States will continue to work to mitigate North Korea's destabilizing and provocative behavior and maintain peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.)

이날 청문회에서 조니 언스트(Joni Ernst) 상원의원은 중국, 러시아, 이란과 함께 북한이 미국의 주요 위협이라고 재차 강조했습니다.

언스트 의원: 물론 우리는 러시아의 블라디미르 푸틴 대통령과 중국의 시진핑 주석과 같은 대담한 적들과 마주하고 있다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 둘 다 안정적이고 번영하는 글로벌 질서를 파괴하기 위해 적극적으로 노력하고 있습니다. 그리고 당연히 이란, 북한과 같은 다른 행위자들이 중대한 위협을 가하고 있습니다. (We, of course, know that we face emboldened adversaries such as Vladimir Putin in Russia and President Xi Jinping in China. Both are actively seeking to--to disrupt a stable and prosperous global order. And then, of course, we have other actors like Iran and North Korea presenting their own significant threats.)

한편 이날 증인으로 함께 참석한 마크 밀리(Mark Miley) 미 합참의장은 서면답변에서 "북한은 계속해서 탄도미사일 능력을 개발하고 있고, 미국 본토는 물론 인도∙태평양 지역 동맹국과 동반자국가들에 실질적인 위험을 가할 수 있는 기술적 능력을 보유하고 있다"고 지적했습니다. (North Korea continues to enhance its ballistic missile capability and possesses the technical capacity to present a real danger to the US homeland as well as our allies and partners across the Indo-Pacific.)

그는 또 "북한이 가장 취약한 북한 주민들과 한반도 평화를 훼손시키는 군사 능력에 초점을 맞추는 걸 줄이겠다는 모습을 보이지 않고 있다"고 덧붙였습니다. (They show no signs of moderation in their focus on military capability at the expense of their most vulnerable citizens and peace of the Korean Peninsula.)
